Andalusian landscape

Overview

Everything the world imagines when it thinks of Spain — flamenco, guitars, white villages, Moorish palaces, and a table that runs late into the night — actually lives in the south. But there’s the version sold to tour buses, and there’s the real one. This week is entirely the second: Andalusia through its food, its music and its soul.

About the region

Andalusia is the soul of the Spanish cliché, and the place that earns it. Eight centuries of Moorish rule left it with some of the most extraordinary architecture in Europe; flamenco was born in its streets; sherry ages in its bodegas and horses dance at its ferias. Seville, Córdoba, Granada and Málaga each guard a different chapter, while white villages scatter across hills of olive groves. It is hot, proud, sensual and unhurried — a region that lives late and feels everything deeply.

Iconic sites

The Alhambra and Generalife in Granada. The Mezquita-Catedral of Córdoba. Seville’s Cathedral, Giralda and Real Alcázar. Ronda and the white villages. Jerez — sherry, horses and flamenco. Málaga, Picasso’s city.

What you’ll experience

A private table with no reservation and no menu, off every list. Wine and sherry tasted with the families who make them. Flamenco at one of the oldest schools, and a real tablao that moves you. The craft behind the sound — guitar-making, and concerts by top players. A day at a working bull ranch. The great Moorish palaces, seen well. In season, the ferias of Seville or Jerez.

When to go

Spring and autumn (feria season in spring).

Who it’s for

Travellers who want the soul of Spain — its food, its music and its warmth — not the postcard.
